In principle, if the type of product is an emulsion (when water and oil are mixed, creamy consistency), then technologically a cream and a serum are the same products – the same substances are added to them, it is not the case that serums are added with something exclusive that cannot be found in a face cream. Since I constantly have to study the composition of cosmetics, and I am well acquainted with the production processes of cosmetics, the sad part is that often a face cream from the same manufacturer is even better than a serum – its composition is richer, it is more nutritious and has more benefits for our skin. Meanwhile, in order to create a light serum consistency, substances that are not necessarily beneficial for the skin, often irritating, are added, many additives to create a pleasant consistency of the product, fragrances, pigments, small concentrations of active ingredients. Another marketing trick of manufacturers is a water-based gel serum, which is recommended to be used under a cream. Or even better – a completely liquid aqueous consistency concentrate, fluid or serum, a product offered under the name of a serum, which contains only a few ingredients beneficial to the skin for a cosmic price. And what? Consumers still believe in advertising and promises, buy and use low-value cosmetic products, waiting for that miraculous effect. I do not want to take it so seriously and “write off” all aqueous concentrates – some of them can really be useful for our skin and they can really be useful to use together with a face cream, but the essential feature of such products should be a sufficiently high concentration of certain substances that help solve certain skin problems or activate skin renewal processes. And a little more information for consideration. Water vs. emulsion: Skin absorbs lipid products better, which means that cream-based cosmetics are more effective than water-based ones. Therefore, an emulsion-based facial serum will be more beneficial. Cream vs. serum: maybe it's better to find a high-quality and active face cream that can replace both products? This way you will not only save your time and money, but also reduce consumption, which is a rather acute problem these days. Eye creams: the situation is very similar to that of serums. In many cases, the composition of a face cream will be better than that of an eye cream. In eye creams, in order to achieve a light texture and quick absorption, you will definitely find a higher alcohol content and lower concentrations of active ingredients, as well as fewer lipid-based substances, natural oils, which are very useful for the thin skin around the eyes. Therefore, my recommendation is to not spend money on eye creams, it is better to buy a good face cream and use it for the eye area.
